Form DS-82 is used for eligible U.S. passport renewals by mail. You can use this form if your passport is about to expire, has recently expired, has no blank pages left, or needs to be renewed after a legal name change. You can complete a Form DS-82 passport renewal if your current or most recent passport:
- Is undamaged and in your possession
- Was issued to you when you were 16 or older
- Was issued within the last 15 years
- Was issued under your current name, or you can provide legal proof of your name change
- Has few or no blank pages left
- Expires in the next 6 months
- Has recently expired
A passport is your key to international travel. If your current passport is close to expiry, has expired recently, or doesn’t meet the entry rules for your destination, you should start your US passport renewal application before booking or confirming travel.
Real Use Cases
To help you understand when Form DS-82 may apply, here are a few common examples of travelers using our US passport renewal service:
- 6-month validity travelers: Emma is flying abroad soon, but her passport expires in five months. Because some destinations require at least 6 months of passport validity, she uses our tool to prepare her passport renewal form DS-82 before traveling.
- Frequent travelers: Daniel’s passport is still valid, but it has few blank pages left after years of international trips. Since extra visa pages are no longer added to U.S. passports, he uses Form DS-82 to renew his passport.
- Post-pandemic travelers: Michelle has not traveled internationally for several years, and her passport expired two years ago. Because it was issued when she was 16 or older and is still within the renewal window, she can renew by mail using Form DS-82.

How long does it take to renew a U.S. passport?
Routine U.S. passport renewal processing currently takes 4 to 6 weeks from the time the government receives your application. Expedited processing takes 2 to 3 weeks for an additional government fee.
Mailing time is not included, so the total time can be longer. You should renew your passport early, especially if your destination requires 6 months of passport validity.

How much does it cost to renew a U.S. passport?
The standard government fee to renew a U.S. passport book is $130. If you need expedited processing, there’s an additional government fee of $60. Optional delivery services may also add to the total cost.
With Form DS-82 passport renewal, eligible adult applicants don’t pay the $35 acceptance facility execution fee used for first-time DS-11 applications.

Do I have to pay with a check to renew my passport?
For a U.S. passport renewal application by mail using Form DS-82, government fees are normally paid by check or money order.
The payment must be included in the renewal package you mail with your printed DS-82 form, current passport, and passport photo. Don’t send cash. Make sure the payment amount matches the passport product and service speed you selected.

How can I track the status of my passport renewal application?
After mailing your U.S. passport renewal application, you can track delivery through the mail carrier first.
Once the government receives and processes your application, you can check the passport application status online using your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Status updates may take time to appear after delivery.

Can I complete my U.S. passport renewal online?
You can use My Passport Hub to prepare your passport renewal form DS-82 online, check your information, and generate the completed form for printing.
However, our DS-82 service is not a fully online government renewal submission. After completing the form, you must print it, sign it, gather the required documents, and mail your renewal package to the correct processing address.

Do I get my old passport back after renewing?
Yes. When you renew by mail, you must include your most recent U.S. passport in the renewal package. After processing, the government will cancel the old passport and return it separately from your new passport.
The two documents may arrive on different dates, so don‘t worry if your old passport is not returned in the same envelope.

Can I renew a child's passport using Form DS-82?
No. A child’s passport cannot be renewed using Form DS-82. U.S. passports for minors under 16 are valid for 5 years, and the child must apply again in person using Form DS-11.
This process requires supporting documents and parental consent. If you are applying for a child, use the child passport application process instead of DS-82 renewal.

Can I renew my passport if expired 6 years ago?
No. If your passport expired more than 5 years ago, you no longer qualify for renewal by mail using Form DS-82. You must apply again in person using Form DS-11 as a new passport application.
This means completing the DS-11 form, gathering citizenship and identity documents, and submitting the application at a passport acceptance facility.
